When Alexis and Walt Sassard moved from Brooklyn, NY — where Alexis was attending school for interior design and Walt was working as a fashion photographer — to The Woodlands, TX, the extra space was overwhelming to the couple. “We went from a 500-square-foot apartment in Brooklyn to an almost 2,500-square-foot two-story house. We had a good laugh when we put our old sofa and coffee table in the living room. It looked like dollhouse furniture,” Alexis jokes. Moving to be closer to family and looking to start a family of their own, Texas has given them more than they could have dreamed of.

While their 1999 traditional home would be considered newer construction and similar to others in the area from the outside, it stands completely on its own once you enter the front door. “We wanted to design a home that flowed effortlessly from room to room, so that meant sticking to a relatively neutral palette and incorporating accents like Persian rugs throughout,” Alexis says. The process has taken all four years since they moved in to complete the transformation. “It’s been time consuming and we still need to make a few more tweaks, but it’s been something we’ve truly enjoyed working on. The first year was essentially spent erasing all the mistakes from the previous owners. Once we had a clean canvas to work with, we were able to visualize how we wanted each room to function.” The couple incorporated some of the great vintage furniture Walt has collected over the years and scoured local antique shops for more pieces that were needed. From there, it was marrying the traditional style of the house to the mid-century modern style that they love. Working from home, Alexis, who is a blogger and also the designer behind her own homeware collection, Alexis Renee Sassard, was able to turn an upstairs room into a light-filled space that is perfect for working. Having an office just a stair-climb away helped while working on the design of the home as well. She didn’t have to leave the site to go to work — she was on hand to oversee the design and remodel progress daily.

Working within the home is also ideal for Alexis to be close to the couple’s two children — who are abundantly welcome in each space, but maintain organization from room to room when it comes to their toys. “We have two young kids, ages four and one, and it’s been very important to us that we don’t let the toys run the show. Everything has a place and although sometimes they don’t always make it back to their dedicated homes, we’ve worked really hard with the kids to adopt this concept into their daily routines.” I love the neutral palette of each room, with the signature muted pop of color on one wall, a feature used in several of the rooms. I hope you enjoy this house as much as Alexis and her family do. “Every morning, I walk downstairs and am still in awe that we get to call this place home.” —Erin

Image above: “My husband is very much into ‘moody spaces.’ I like bright, airy spaces with hints of green. He gravitates to rich, saturated color much more than I do, but I think this was a nice compromise for us,” Alexis shares about the master bedroom.

“I somehow convinced my husband to paint that accent wall this nude blush color and after much hesitation, he finally agreed after I promised to paint it back to white if he hated it. He actually ended up loving it,” Alexis shares.

“This is the kitchen’s best angle, in my opinion. I love being able to see [the] long stretch of open shelves and the entire color scheme in one frame,” Alexis says.

“My husband asked for one room in the house, and so the parlor became his! It screams Walt with all of the Americana details.”

“The parlor is right off the entrance so it doubles as our music room and Walt’s ‘room,’ which he doesn’t mind. We spin records and have dance parties with the kids in here and it’s just a lot of fun,” Alexis shares.

“As much as I love the concept of our tub/shower area, the quality of the tile work is just not up to par with the rest of our home. It’s something we’ll need to fix someday down the road… When we win the lottery! Ha,” Alexis laughs.

“[Luella’s] Jenny Lind style bed was actually my sister-in-law, Rhett’s childhood bed. Rhett told her Granddaddy she wanted ‘a two-pilla bed’ and he refinished this one for her,” Alexis shares.
